Second generation auction, appraisal, brokerage, estate buying and liquidation firm established in New York in 1957 by historian Richard Stedman and his wife, interior designer Joy Allen. R V Stedman, son of the company founders, graduated from the Jim Graham School of Auctioneering in Palm Beach, Florida in 1981 and was profiled later that year by Gannett Newspapers as the youngest auctioneer in New York State. A graduate of Harpur College with a degree in Art History, he authored a popular series of articles on 20th century design for the Antiquers Guide and was a fine arts writer for the Hudson Valley and Berkshire Antiquer publications. His catalogue citations have been included as price reference and art market data by American and European publishers including ADEC, AskArt, artnet, Art & Auction and Metropolitan Home and his research has been contributed to reference books on French printmaking, the Garvan Collection catalogue of Yale University, Turner Reuters Animal and
Sporting Artists in America, the archives of the Albany Institute of History and Art and Davenports fine art reference encyclopedia. R Stedman is a past president of the Ulster County Antiques Dealers Association, was a research consultant to the Greenwich Village decorative arts dealer The American Folk Art Gallery and auctioneer for the inaugural James Cox Gallery benefit auction at Woodstock. He helped organize an exhibition of WPA printmaking and sculpture exhibited at SoHos FirstHalf gallery that appeared at Sanford Smiths premier Modernism show. He has exhibited at antiques and fine arts fairs from Boston to Miami as well as in Las Vegas and at the first ever Manhattan antiques fair focusing on art and design of the 1960s. During the 1990s he served as adjunct faculty for the New York State Public School System and in 2002 authored the NAA-published "ABC's of Fine Art Auctioneering" audio book. His personal collection has been profiled in The Wall Street Journal and he has
served as a Tampa Bay Alumni Recruitment Volunteer for Binghamton University. He has been involved in the cataloging, exhibition and marketing of the estates of
more than one hundred American and European artists. Beginning as a charity auction specialist in 1981 and providing auctioneering and auction exhibition cataloging support to over a dozen regional auction houses for over a decade, the company started holding fine arts auctions including events in Westchester County in 1996. During that year they became one of the earliest auction and appraisal firms to recognize the importance and potential of the internet and were one of the world's first online appraisal companies in any professional field. In 1997 they conducted the first online-only auction advertised in Antiques & the Arts Weekly. Between 1999 to 2004 R Stedman served as a Sotheby's Dot Com Associate for their Florida office that was established in the late 1990s during which time he served as an event auctioneer for the Raymond James Corporation.

Exceptional Auctioneer Services
Outstanding buyer experience that included prompt follow up, excellent merchandise, and accurate descriptions. Clearly, Richard Stedman Estate Services is knowledgeable — and this is also reflected in their business acumen that includes exceptional support and customer satisfaction. I couldn’t be more please with my item, and how the entire transaction was expertly managed that also involved Stedman’s recommending Charlie at UPS who is one of the finest shippers ever! My fragile glass lamp shade was securely handled, and well packed due to Richard Stedman’s partnership with UPS, which further resulted in an overall great experience due to this teaming arrangement. I highly recommend Richard Stedman Auction Services, they will not disappoint!
