Haitian Naive Art from the Brictson Collect
Collection Overview: Haitian Paintings from the Bricston (Brictson) Collection This outstanding group of 20th-century Haitian paintings comes from the distinguished Bricston (Brictson) Collection, assembled by Dr. Robert C. Brictson. A passionate collector who lived part-time in Jacmel, Haiti, Dr. Brictson acquired many works directly from artists’ studios during the golden age of Haitian art (1940s–1980s). The collection is particularly strong in Jacmel and Cap-Haïtien artists and features a rich variety of naive, visionary, spiritual, and genre subjects. The selection showcases the vibrant creativity and cultural depth of Haitian painting. Highlights include: Early masters: Marc Cadet (1946 biblical scene), Charles Anatole (genre and abstract works), Henri-Robert Bresil (flamingo landscapes), and Guy Joachim (village scenes). Symbolic and spiritual works: Abel Michel, Celin Buteau (La Sirène and ritual scenes), Jorelus Joseph (figures and birds), Julien Valery (owls), S. Pierre (1967 Vodou figure), and Gloire (religious narrative). Landscapes, still lifes & Edens: Charles Charlôt, Smith Blanchard, Eclourid Klat, Sovigne Demond, and Thelus. Saint Soleil influence: Delion (1973). Characterized by bold color, expressive linework, flattened perspective, and a fusion of Christian, Vodou, folk, and personal symbolism, these paintings capture the joy, spirituality, and everyday life of Haiti. Many retain excellent original color and surface quality. The items I received were exactly as described and pictured. They are absolutely beautiful! The items were packaged with exceptional care and I was provided with a tracking number to keep track of their arrival.
