Winter Photographic History Auction 2026

We are pleased to present our Winter Photography Auction, opening January 31 at 1:00 PM Eastern, featuring approximately 270 individual lots spanning the full breadth of 19th and 20th century photography. The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography's formative century. Highlights of the auction include Abraham Lincoln “The Latest Photograph,” an albumen print by made March 6, 1865, just weeks before Lincoln's assassination; a striking daguerreotype of a boy holding an oversized white rabbit; a rare crystalotype portrait by Whipple from the Meade Daguerreotype; and a harrowing group of nine photographs documenting violence and destruction during the Tulsa, Oklahoma race massacre of 1921. These anchor a catalog that moves fluidly between the iconic and the intimate. The sale encompasses daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, stereoviews, and albumen prints, ranging from finely cased portraits to working photographs made for personal remembrance rather than display. Subjects include Civil War soldiers, Native Americans, occupational portraits, musicians, storefronts, domestic interiors, and scenes of mourning. Many images survive in original leather cases, while others appear on period mounts or within early albums, each retaining the physical character of its original use.
