Lesson learned: Ask for a photo of the COA BEFORE bidding! I had asked the auction house for provenance, and they did respond quickly with information that sounded plausible. They have good feedback on this site, and since the item said "This painting comes with a COA issued by Artemis Gallery," and my friend in the art world said Artemis Gallery is reputable, I went ahead and bid. Once I had time to do actual research (AFTER winning the item, unfortunately) I discovered that the painting is an amalgamation of two legitimate Tanguy paintings. Apparently this is a common trick used to make paintings look like an artist's actual work. I also found information conflicting with the supposed provenance of the piece, and the auction house could not provide any verification for the provenance they told me pre-bidding. The COA turns out to be, of course, from an Artemis Gallery wholly unrelated to the actual well-known Artemis Gallery. The "Artemis Gallery, Limited" on the COA does not exist except as a website for entering COA numbers. It's my fault for not doing more homework before bidding, and somewhere on the item listing it says "attributed to" so there was no way to back out of the sale. But on the other hand, this place is knowingly misleading buyers. Not cool.
