Fine & Decorative Art: Live Salesroom Auction

Cowan?s Fall auction of Fine & Decorative Art will be held in two sessions, the first featuring Continental & American art and the second featuring Americana. The auction is anchored by the collection of Dr. M. Donald Hayes of Wilmington, Ohio. The collection includes many fine examples of early American furniture, notably a rare Chippendale sofa with removable back (Lot 368), a Federal Casuarina sofa (Lot 429), and a New Hampshire chest of drawers in flame birch (Lot 428). Also featured from this collection are noteworthy American portraits including a portrait of Colonel William Allen Trimble by Matthew Jouett (Lot 402), a pair of pastels by Benjamin Blyth (Lot 292), and a rare signed miniature by John Brewster, Jr. (Lot 290). Fine silver, mirrors, and textiles from the Hayes? collection will also be offered. Cowan?s is proud to offer two exceptional pieces of American furniture: The Captain John Cowan Secretary Desk and Bookcase (Lot 291) and a rare Lotus table by John Scott Bradstreet (Lot 171). Other fine art highlights from the auction include: a large and exceptional beach scene by Edward Henry Potthast (Lot 30), The Warrior by Carl Ferdinand Wimar (Lot 269), and a portrait of George Washington after John Trumbull (Lot 268).
