Modern & Contemporary British Art

This is the inaugural sale for Bloomsbury's new Modern British Art department. Angus Maguire, Head of Department, explains:
"Modern British art is as much a period and place, as it is a style and sensibility of artistic production. We have come to think of it as the parochial half-brother to the greats of 20th Century international art, such as Matisse or Picasso, very insular and only comprehensible to those from these islands. This, of course, is nonsense as some artists from this period and style have crossed the boundaries into international stardom, such as Henry Moore, William Scott, David Hockney, Richard Hamilton, etc, and there others who are currently undergoing this process, especially Lynn Chadwick and Ivon Hitchens. We are pleased to offer two works by these artists of exceptional quality, both very fresh to the market held in private collections for the last forty years or so. Chadwick's 'Maquette for Winged Figure III', 1961, is a good early sculpture in perfect condition by this renowned artist from the revered Obolenska Collection in Dublin (£20,000-30,000). Hitchens' 'Red, Black and White Tulips', 1965, is arguably one of the finest still lifes from the sixties to have come onto the market in decades, fresh from a private collection in Sussex having been acquired directly from the 1965 exhibition at Waddington Galleries on Cork Street and is estimated to reach £30,000-50,000." Other artists on offer include Dame Elizabeth Frink, Edward Burra, Francis Newton, Henry Cliffe and Sandra Fisher.
