THE COLLECTION OF FRANK AND LYN CORNER

Frank and Lyn Corner first met in the capital city in 1941, and were introduced to art through Victoria University?s famed intellectual circle that included historians F. L.W. Wood and J. C. Beaglehole. Frank Corner joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at its inception and rose to become its head in a distinguished career spanning from the 1940s to the 1980s, during which time the Corners honed their eye for modern art while Frank served as Ambassador in New York and Washington. Lyn Corner went on to become chairperson of the National Art Gallery Council (now part of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa), and was the art adviser responsible for assembling the excellent Rutherford Trust Collection, compiled to showcase the development of twentieth century New Zealand art. Crucial in the emergence of a modern, independent New Zealand rooted in the Pacific, Frank and Lyn Corner compiled over their lifetimes an important collection of modern New Zealand art representing their confidence in the art and culture of this country. Frank Corner passed away in 2014, and Lyn in 2016. Their collection has been kept entirely extant by the family at the Corners? lifelong home in Thorndon, Wellington.
