Fine Art & Antiques Session I

Simpson Galleries is honored to present our Spring Fine Art & Antiques Auction on behalf of the many consignors who have entrusted us with their treasures. The two-day auction event on May 18th and 19th brings to market a closely curated selection of quality pieces spanning centuries of creation by the world’s finest craftsmen, artists and artisans. Nothing generates more excitement to collectors (and bidders!) than fresh-to-the-market iconic examples of works by renowned artists. Andrew Wyeth’s subtly beautiful and poignant watercolor featured in the catalog is just that! A gift from Wyeth to his friend and then director of the Farnsworth Art Museum, Wendell S. Hadlock, the painting depicts Mr. Hadlock’s daughter, Jean, looking over a Maine vista that was cherished by both men. Credited with catapulting Wyeth’s career into national significance, Hadlock is shown Wyeth’s gratitude through the creation of the watercolor and a personal dedication signed intimately “Andy Wyeth.” The painting has remained with members of the family and loaned to the Farnsworth for the last 50 years - only just now revealed for public admiration and the care of its next owner. The auction also includes a wonderful group of design and art from 20th century modern masters such as Albers, Kahn, Picasso, Miró and Matisse - from the estate of well-known Houston architect, city councilman and artist, Peter Brown. Other highlights from various consignors include important 18th century furniture and 19th/early 20th century art by Raimundo de Madrazo and Édouard Cortès. More recent 20th century works are represented by Friedel Dzubas, Nancy Graves, Glenna Goodacre, Huang Gang, Dorothy Hood and Jesús Moroles. Preview exhibition Monday, May 13th to Friday, May 17th. The more than 600 lots of fine art, antiques, decorative art, furniture, collectibles, modern design and jewelry come from collectors and estates throughout Texas, the Southwest and nationally.
