Fine Chinese taste and imperial works of art
The morning session at 10 o'clock (local time in Belgium) on Saturday the 27th (lots 1-243) is dedicated to 19th and 20th C. Chinese porcelain. Star lots here are a number of late Qing mark and period wares, the seven fish bowls and a number of attractive Chinese taste 'qianjiang cai' wares. Carefully selected from a number of European private collections, this session will certainly attract the interest of the discerning Chinese collector.
The afternoon session starts at 2pm with Chinese export wares for the Asian market: 'Bleu de Hue' for the Vietnamese, 'Bencharong' wares for the Thai market and Straits and Peranakan wares.
This brings us to the metalwork section of this sale, lead by a strong and unprecedented group of gilt bronze Buddhist figures. This section is mainly composed of two important Belgian private collections. Bronze censers, vases and other utensils spanning over a period of ca. 30 centuries, bring us to the cloisonné section, with an impressive Jiaqing period fish bowl and a rare Qianlong mark and period censer. A small group of Canton enamel wares marks the end of this part of the sale.
Returning to porcelain, we embark on a journey through the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Just two of the many outstanding pieces are the Qianlong period set of four famille rose black gravel-embellished plaques from a French collection and an unusual Kangxi period underglaze red rouleau vase.
Other important features are a number of Wanli and Kangxi mark and period pieces and the collection of fine Transitional wares.
Equally interesting and often underlighted, are the wares from the Swatow region. The 22 lots on offer here, are our largest group so far! That is not all for this Saturday, though. With various Longquan celadon and qingbai wares, blanc de Chine, enamel on biscuit and Yixing stoneware, this afternoon session is packed with attractive and interesting pieces.
