October 12 | Gallery Auction

Diamonds and pearls, designer fine jewelry, American paintings and a spectacular automaton clock are just a few highlights of the October 12 Gallery Auction. This sale is bursting with exciting lots in every department. Cartier, Hermès and David Yurman are featured in jewelry, along with a strand of GIA-certified natural saltwater pearls ($5,000-$7,000). You'll also find Native American and Mexican silver jewelry, fine timepieces and vintage estate jewelry. For the art collector there is an excellent selection of American paintings such as the compelling landscapes by Fern Coppedge (1883-1951) and Ralph Blakelock (1847-1919). The 1958 silkscreen "Red Sea" by Wayne Thiebaud is another great find. "American Grotesque" photographer William Mortensen is featured. The sale includes wonderful Mid-century modern art and furniture. An 1814 Pennsylvania German deep red, fraktur painted wood chest is offered at $3,000-$5,000. The "Audubon" flatware service by Tiffany & Co. is among the sterling silver lots. Over 200 lots of Asian art are in this sale: fine porcelains, large cloisonné enamel pieces, carved jade and Japanese woodblocks to name just a few. The Chinese six-panel screen is decorated with exquisite jade and multicolor hardstone overlaid on black lacquer. Visitors to Michaan's auction gallery will be delighted by the chinoiserie automaton clock ($60,000-$80,000), a wind-up mechanical marvel with a waterfall and boats on a river, crowned by a lovely pagoda where a tiny figure rings a bell.
