Our last auction of the year is headlined by two masterworks from very different schools of early American ceramic craftsmanship. One, a stoneware water cooler by Moses Clark Bell, made in 1825 in the small town of Cornwall, NY (55 miles north of Manhattan), features one of the most outstanding incised decorations known: a large, delicately-scrawled mermaid w/ impressed scales and looping tail?a true folk portrait in clay. The other is a recent discovery in the mysterious and ever-popular genre of the American face vessel: an oversized harvest jug from Edgefield, SC made circa 1840-75. Featuring a highly-unusual treatment of green alkaline glaze w/ poured iron slip highlights, this work displays expressive modeling related to African art, further enhanced by its enormous size. Both of these objects represent the decorative zeniths of their regional styles, and this auction offers an opportunity to acquire a museum-quality object at a level rarely made available. Rounding out the sale is a fine selection from the North, South and Midwest: An Outstanding Redware Dish and Miniature Pitcher from Alamance County, NC, c1790-1820. An Important Baltimore Stoneware Jar w/ Incised Federal Eagle Decoration, c1795-1815. An Exceptional NYC Area Stoneware Jar Inscribed "C. Atterbury / August 24th, 1807." An Important JOHN YOUNG & CO. / HARRISBURG, PA Stoneware Jar w/ Rooster Decoration. A Historically Significant Large-Sized Face Pipe Depicting a Native-American Chief by Anna Pottery. An Extremely Rare Fort Edward, NY Crock w/ Scarecrow-in-Garden Decoration. A Very Rare Water Cooler w/ Incised Eagle Decoration, MOORE & COLVIN, Tallmadge, OH. An Important Canning Jar by the African American SC potter, Rich Williams. An Excellent Selection of Western PA Stoneware. Deer-Decorated Stoneware by Wm. Macquoid of Manhattan. A Fine Selection of Bell Family Pottery. An Outstanding Selection of New England Redware. A Selection of New York State Stoneware Crocks w/ Canine Decorations.
