The Sandy Stagg collection and other owners
At the end of June Sandy Stagg closed the shutters and padlocked the doors of her famous Antique Clothing Shop in Portobello Road for the last time. It was a poignant moment as she has spent the best part of her life lovingly collecting and trading in vintage clothes. Indeed she was one of the first to specialise in the field in 1970 opening her first vintage boutique which she called the 'Amelia Earhart (gone but not forgotten) Clothing Shop'.
For the last fifteen years, Sandy Staggs shop in the Portobello Road has been a magnet for designers, journalists and fashionistas the world over. Designers such as John Galliano, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen all visited as young students keen to explore the interesting and differing construction and textures of clothes from past decades. A new generation of collectors have discovered the beauty and quality of vintage clothing within its walls. Entering the shop felt like entering an Aladdins cave; from floor to ceiling it was filled with shimmering beaded flapper dresses, shelves stacked with antique lingerie or pretty floral blouses, richly coloured antique shawls and a plethora of exquisite accessories.
