Art Nouveau - Art Deco

Our ‚Art Nouveau – Art Déco’ auction, which takes place on October 21, contains ca. 800 items of artist-designed furniture, glass, ceramics, metalwork and jewellery, as well as posters and rare original designs for Munich posters of the late 1930s. Among the highlights is the only recorded example of an elegant 1904 oak armchair by Henry van de Velde (estimate € 16.000), also the designer in 1899 of a mahogany stained oak file cabinet (€ 6.500). Hermann Obrist, a founding father of Jugendstil in Munich, is represented by an exceedingly rare serving-table, 1898,(€6.000) that is characterized by a radical spirit of abstraction based on the idea of the growth and tension of vegetable forms. Among the excellent glass from Nancy workshops is a ‘verre parlant’ by Emile Gallé [€8.000). Tiffany’s 10-light bronze and glass ‘Lily cluster lamp’, 1902, (€ 35.000), comes from an important private German collection and is accompanied by an original dated letter, confirming the sale and the price, from the Minna Rosenblatt Gallery in New York, from whom the lamp was purchased in 1977. Carlo Bugatti’s elegant openwork cupboard, ca. 1900, (€5.000) has delicately painted landscape scenes as well as the usual exotic inlaid ornaments and incrustations. Among the most notable items of silver is a large pair of candlesticks by the imperial court maker J. H. Werner, Berlin ca. 1902, in unusually undulating Jugendstil forms derived from Henry van de Velde (€ 20.000).
