Books and Works on Paper

Lots 1-30: The David Salmon collection of books and pamphlets on the history of education. David Salmon (1852-1944) was born in Narberth, Pembrokeshire. He studied at Borough Road Training College, London, before becoming headmaster of a school at Belvedere Place, Borough Road. From 1891 to 1922 he was principal of the Swansea Training College for women. In his first year in this post he began to build up a library for the use of the students. When he retired in 1932 the collection stood at about 12,000 volumes. The college has now closed and the collection dispersed, with his collection of textbooks now at Brunel University. The books offered here for sale bear a variety of bookplates and unobtrusive ink or colour pencil numbers (mostly to front endpapers), but with a few exceptions they do not have library stamps.
