Property of Robert Henry Adams Fine Art

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is pleased to announce the sale of works from Robert Henry Adams Fine Art. These works will be featured in a single-owner evening auction May 4, 2009. Robert Henry Adams, the distinguished and beloved art dealer, passed away in 2001. The Chicago native, who began his career as a dealer of books and prints, first opened the gallery out of his apartment in 1980, then moved to a storefront on Webster Avenue in Chicago’s industrial district in 1983. Dealing mainly to the trade, Adams developed his broad range of expertise during this time, and worked to cultivate an awareness for the work of the under recognized artist and celebrate the urban, industrial vision of Chicago. In 1994, Robert Henry Adams Fine Art relocated to 715 North Franklin in the exclusive River North gallery district. Adams’ scholarship, professionalism and devotion to his craft secured the gallery as a leader in American Art. Adams used the gallery’s national presence to emphasize the importance of the modernist movement in Chicago and brought focus to the city and its context within American art history. Specializing in Abstract Expressionism, Precisionism, Modernism, African American and Regional Art, Adams’ gallery achieved international recognition over the years, with thanks to Adams’ strong conviction and sophisticated eye for talent. Adams was a member of the Chicago Art Dealers Association, served as chairman of the Ethics Committee and sat on the Association’s board for two terms. The gallery has participated in Art Chicago, FADA in Los Angeles, Modernism and Works on Paper in New York and USArtists in Philadelphia and handled the estates of artists John Storrs, Jessie Pixley Lacey, Romolo Roberti, George Josimovich and Murray Jones. Robert Henry Adams was known for his generous spirit and sincere curiosity for art. His passion played an important role in the promotion of Chicago and its artists.
