IRISH & BRITISH ART - 28 SEPTEMBER at 6PM GMT

Whyte's September auction of Irish and British art boasts over 200 interesting and very collectable works by a myriad of artists, and with estimates generally in the high hundreds to the low thousands the sale is tailored to the less affluent times we now live in. Most of the works offered have not been on the market for many years so the owners, who bought them for modest sums decades ago, can afford to pass on good value to today's younger collectors.

There is great value to be had in good Irish landscapes by James Humbert Craig, Maurice Wilks and George Gillespie.

For the connoisseur of antique paintings this sale offers a fine selection including works by George Barret, Martin Cregan, John Anster Fitzgerald, Frederick Newenham, Andrew Nicholl, Erskine Nicol, and James Arthur O'Connor. A superb collection of works by William Percy French will no doubt attract attention and spirited bidding by his many followers. We are delighted to present here a very large representation of Kenmare in its original 1903 pokerwork Celtic Revival Arts & Crafts frame; a similarly sized work by Percy French in a similar frame, formerly in the Earl of Iveagh's collection made a record-breaking €44,000 at Whyte's a few years ago so our estimate of €15,000 to €20,000 may be judged modest.

A stunning portrait of Deirdre, the artist's niece, by Norah McGuinness, is a major highlight of this sale. We think this may have been chosen by the artist for her Royal Hibernian Academy exhibit in the early 1950s, around the time she represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale. Including elements of the School of Paris style, with its hints of cubism,it is also reminiscent of the work of Patrick Swift and Lucien Freud.

If you always aspired to owning a Lavery of quality but couldn't afford the huge prices for his major works this sale offers a miniature masterpiece in the shape of a busy street scene of Rabat in 1920, for a modest estimate of €20,000 to €30,000.
