Edo Sparkle and Tokyo Splendor

New York - On June 18, Bonhams will present Edo Sparkle and Tokyo Splendor: Japanese Art of the Last Three Centuries, a sale comprising of 116 lots of fine lacquer, netsuke, and decorative arts. Leading the auction is a Meiji era lacquer tray with a bird-shaped kite by Shibata Zeshin from the Collection of Drs. Ed and Julie Lewis. The kite depicted in the tray is no ordinary toy but a special variety that was probably Zeshin's own invention. It has an estimate of $7,000-9,000. Jeff Olson, Bonhams Director of Japanese Art, said: "This sale highlights the changes in traditional arts such as lacquer and ceramics and shows the concerted effort to appeal to Western patrons during the Meiji era (1868-1912). The genius of these Japanese artisans lay in their ability to produce items with universal appeal while at the same time stay well within Japanese artistic tradition. The auction includes works of art from the Collection of Drs. Ed and Julie Lewis, the Collection of Richard R. Silverman, sold to benefit Brandeis University, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, among others."
