Modern British and Irish Art

We hold two major auctions annually of the very best Modern British & Irish Art. These curated sales take place at our New Bond Street headquarters, London, in June and November. From Edwardian Art to Camden Town, The Bloomsbury Group, British Surrealism, Neo-Romanticism, St Ives, Constructivism, Post-War and The London School, we offer a wide range of artists and movements. Across 2020 Bonhams are proud to have not only offered more works within the Modern British category than any other auctioneer, but to have also achieved the highest annual sell through rate within the market. Highlights from the year include David Bomberg's The Old City and Cathedral, Ronda (£790,750), William Robert's Women Playing with Cats (£325,250) and Roger Fry's Portrait of E.M. Forster (£325,062), which achieved the highest auction price by any member of the Bloomsbury Group set to date. Further highlights include Henry Moore's 1929 alabaster carving, Mask, (£3,248,750), a record price at auction for a 1920s sculpture by any British artist; Looking Toward Mornington Crescent Station by Frank Auerbach (£1,059,082); L.S. Lowry's Steps at Wick (£890,500); and Sir Stanley Spencer's Garden Path Cookham Rise (£769,250), as well as 1928 (Pill Creek) by Ben Nicholson (£722,500) from the esteemed Cyril Reddihough Collection. The department holds a number of world auction records for works on paper, dominating this market for Paul Nash and John Minton, in addition to achieving the highest price for Walter Sickert, and nine of the top ten for Algernon Newton. Other records include those for Helen Bradley, Sheila Fell and Tristram Hillier. The department consistently performs well with sculpture by artists such as Lynn Chadwick, Dame Elisabeth Frink and Dame Barbara Hepworth, amongst others.
