The May 3 auction showcases American furniture and decorations from the colonial period through the Federal and Classical styles, to the Rococo Revival of the mid-19th century. Silver, ceramics, weathervanes, needlework, Chinese Export porcelain, quilts, rugs, Folk paintings, and historical and decorative prints will also be offered. Featured is a group of furniture from the collection of former New York City Mayor John Lindsay, including a Chippendale mahogany serpentine chest of drawers (lot 2200). Furniture highlights from other owners include a pair of Federal inlaid mahogany card tables, Massachusetts (lot 2212); a Queen Anne maple high chest, New England (lot 2173) and a late 18th century walnut corner cupboard, Mid-Atlantic States, possibly Pennsylvania (lot 2215). American silver features a pair of Classical pitchers retailed by Baldwin Gardiner, New York (lot 2128) and a presentation ewer, circa 1835, by Marquand & Co. (lot 2130). Among the decorations are a handsome Regency gilt-wood pier mirror (lot 2193), a scrimshaw and rosewood purse depicting a whaling scene (lot 2158), and a painted sheet iron weathervane depicting a man peering through a spyglass (lot 2204). The selection of prints features engravings and aquatints after John James Audubon, including Red-Breasted Merganser (lot 2056), and Rough-Legged Falcon (lot 2051), as well as Currier & Ives lithographs and engraving and aquatints after Karl Bodmer. Paintings are highlighted by a portrait of a young girl by Thomas Sully (1783-1872) (lot 2024) and Bridge in Ulster County, New York, 1875 by William Rickarby Miller (1818-1893) (lot 2019).
