Photographs

Doyle's November 17 sale of Fine Photography features a major 19th century photographically illustrated work, Felice Beato's Photographic Views of Japan with Historical and Descriptive Notes, very rarely found complete. 20th century photography includes a signed example on the original mount of Margaret Bourke-White's great 1931 composition The George Washington Bridge, Hudson River, NYC, 1931, together with several other significant images by the photographer. A major contemporary of hers, Walker Evans, is represented by several important images from his Depression-era series of images of rural Alabama, and an extraordinary series of forty-six images of Cuba, taken during his 1933 trip there, given to the author Ernest Hemingway, with the cable between the two men. Fashion photography, an ever-popular category, is epitomized by works by Irving Penn (Schiaparelli Jacket with tinsel and glass, 1974) and Helmut Newton Jassara, Rue Aubriot, Paris, 1977. Works by Bill Brandt, Harry Callahan, Ray Metzker, George Tice, and others are featured. Two Brandts are in the sale, including a rare large-format print of one of the East Sussex Coast series, 1979, which displays Brandt?s affinity with the work of Henry Moore. Contemporary work includes three images by Cindy Sherman, several large images by Ahmet Ertug (Hagia Sophia, Istanbul), Chris Jordan (three images from his series Intolerable Beauty: Portraits of American Mass Consumption), etc. There will also be an interesting series of lots of photobooks, many of which are inscribed.
