Modern and Decorative Arts

From a Belgian private collection, we bring a selection of western design and fine art from the end of the 19th century till today. The objects assembled in this sale might strike us as a very eclectic selection, but upon closer inspection, all of them, in their field - whether it be silverware, ceramics, glass, furniture, or fine art - tell the story of the way our lives have been shaped through a variety of groundbreaking designs for the past 150 years. An important selection of works by Christopher Dresser (1834 - 1904) shows us the importance of this British designer who paved the way for what we know today as industrial design. Some of his designs look as fresh and groundbreakingly pure today that it is hard to believe they were made more than a century ago. Besides brilliant industrial design, further illustrated by iconic pieces such as the Gras Lamp, Jieldé lamps, Scandinavian design, and several classics edited by Fontana Arte, we also find pieces that stand out because of their craftsmanship: a superb gueridon by Eugène Printz, perfectly catching the spirit of the twenties with a beautifully lacquered top, the leaf-shaped plate by Tapio Wirkkala that put Finnish design on the map during the 1951 Milan Triennale of Design, a solid mahogany pitcher by Alexandre Noll that is closer to sculpture than applied art, furniture by Pierre Chapo,... Further completed by a selection of fine art, ranging from Philippe Wolfers and George Minne over Jean Brusselmans, Dan Van Severen to an important sculpture by Thierry de Cordier, this collection expresses perfectly the curiosity and keen eye of its collector: art without frontiers.
