EDWARD S CURTIS Unique Copper Plates Part II

Andrew Smith Gallery Photography Auctions LLC., is pleased to announce its Spring Premier Auction, Live, Online, and No Reserve: EDWARD S CURTIS Unique Copper Plates Part II from The North American Indian 1907-1930. The Auction begins at 11am Pacific, 2pm New York Time, Thursday, May 26, 2022. New York City May 21-22, 2022, Selected Preview 9am-5pm at PopUp Photography New York! In the Executive Hotel Le Soleil, 38 W 36th St. between 5th Ave. and Avenue of the Americas, 2 blocks from the 2022 AIPAD The Photography Show. The North American Indian, the most lavishly illustrated book in the history of printing, contained 20 volumes of text, each with 74 or more small-format photogravures. There were 20 supplementary large-format portfolios of 35 or more photogravures, all created from copper printing plate photographs by Edward S. Curtis. This auction offers 97 of these unique copper plates. Curtis meticulously edited the copper plates as he understood these presented his ultimate artistic expression for each print. Originally owned by Curtis with support for the project from J.P. Morgan the plates were purchased in 1982 by two Silicon Valley investors. They began removing the steel facings, originally used for printing the photogravures, and realized that they were transcendently beautiful photographic objects. With the steel facing removed the plates were revealed to be the most lustrous photographs made in the history of photography. Recently Edward S. Curtis copper plates have sold for over $700.000.00 The auction showcases Curtis' masterpieces with portraits, architectural, landscape, ceremonial, storytelling, still life views and tribal lands, lakes, and rivers. Featuring images of the Apache, Sioux, Navajo, Crow, Pueblo Indians, Cheyenne, Kwakiutl, Kutenai, Hidatsa, Mandan, Arikara, Chippewa and tribes from Canada, California, Oregon, Arizona, Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Puget Sound, Vancouver Island, and Alaska.
