A Princely Collection : Polynesia, Melanesia

From a princely collection, we have the privilege to present a selection of exceptional artifacts and artworks from Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. The lots presented in this sale were diligently chosen by their collector for their historical importance, quality, and rarity, but also for the way they represent this multitude of cultures in such extraordinary diversity. A collection of objects from the South Pacific would not be complete without highlighting the seamanship of its inhabitants. Thanks to a series of 19th C; or older scale models of canoes and other vessels, we can fully appreciate the advanced knowledge of seafaring that was at the core of these civilizations. More importantly, very often these skills have been lost over time after contact with Western explorers. More than beautifully crafted models, they are silent and often the only witnesses of a lost culture. Even amongst objects that were destined for daily use such as neck rests, pandanus beaters, bowls, and canoe paddles, or hopefully less daily use, weapons, we rediscover the discerning choices made by the collector, so that the lines between artifact and art become blurred once again: the type of objects that Native is proud and privileged to show to its public.
