Selections from the Private Collection of Barbara and Ira Lipman
On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Doyle will auction Selections from the Private Collection of Barbara and Ira Lipman. A connoisseur collector of Americana and American literature, the Collection includes a fine first edition copy of Walt Whitman?s Leaves of Grass and a letter signed by Thomas Jefferson. Of note is William Keith?s 1694 Truth Advanced in the Correction of Many Gross & hurtful Errors; Wherein is occasionally opened & explained many great and peculiar Mysteries and Doctrines of the Christian Religion, the single most substantial seventeenth century imprint produced by William Bradford and the first book length work printed in New York. Other highlights include Yousef Karsh?s A Fifty-Year Retrospective, one of approximately 75 copies to include the fine portrait photograph of Winston Churchill.
Ira K. Lipman was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on November 15, 1940. He attended Little Rock Central High School, where in 1957, the “Little Rock Nine” became the first African American students to enter the school. At 16, Mr. Lipman served as an inside source for NBC correspondent John Chancellor. Mr. Lipman’s accounts reached a nationwide audience via Chancellor reporting on the racial tension erupting at Little Rock High School following its desegregation
Mr. Lipman graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1960 and founded Guardsmark, one of the world’s premier private security companies, in 1963. His company’s guiding principles – truth, courage and judgment – carried over into his relationships.
Barbara Kelly and Ira A. Lipman were married in July of 1970. She was a trailblazer in early childhood education, having completed her undergraduate degree in her early 40s and then getting a master’s degree. Barbara and Ira enjoyed exploring new subjects, which led to a lifelong interest in collecting prints, rare books and more.
