African Americana
Pioneering figures and key moments that shaped the African American experience over the last 200 years are represented in Hindman's February 28 African Americana Live Auction. From enslavement, abolition, and war, to politics, civil rights, literature, music, and the visual arts, the sale addresses many important themes.
Highlights include Phyllis Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral. London: A. Bell, 1773, first edition of the first book of poetry published by an African American; photographs and an autograph letter signed by Frederick Douglass; photographs, imprints, and ephemera involving Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., most notably a first printing of Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story signed and inscribed by Dr. King; and a "Free Huey" flag that was flown at a protest demonstration to free Huey Newton near the Alameda County Courthouse, Oakland, CA, 1968.
This sale brings together property from several important collections and estates, including the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents, the Patrick Atkinson Collection, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Estate of Carroll J. Delery III, Formerly the "Historical Shop."
