Early American conflicts, politics, social movements, and westward expansion converge in Hindman's June 15-16 American Historical Ephemera and Photography Auction. Day 1 focuses on American conflicts, including the Civil War and Indian Wars, as well as African Americana and early photography (Lots 1-294). Day 2 is devoted to politics, Native American history, and the American West, with a considerable concentration on gold mining (Lots 295-567). Among the many highlights are the Papers of Captain Joseph Claypoole Clark, 4th US Light Artillery, Battery E, WIA Antietam, including frontier and Civil War correspondence, photography, and an appointment signed by Lincoln; an extensive letter archive of David W. Masten, Co. E, New York 143rd Infantry, musician, private, and member of the Ambulance Corps; a significant selection of Lincolniana, including a rare photograph of his second inauguration attributed to Alexander Gardner; a quarter plate daguerreotype, possibly the earliest known photograph of Fort Mackinac, Michigan; and a collection of sketches drawn and compiled by US Army officer Charles A.H. McCauley while serving in various military posts, including Native American ledger art from the Los Piños Ute Indian Agency. The sale features property from several important collections and estates, including the James Milgram, M.D., Collection of Broadsides, Ephemeral Americana, and Historical Documents, Property from the Collection of Stanley B. Slocum, the Patrick Atkinson Collection, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Estate of Carroll J. Delery III, Formerly the "Historical Shop."
