Tribal & Modern Art, 20th Century Furniture

Alongside a selection of European fine art and design - ranging from the famous Moon Map from 1679 by Jean Dominique Cassini IV (lot 32) to one of the very first Plans Mobiles by Pol Bury (lot 76) - we proudly present no less than three ensembles from prestigious collections. The eyecatcher from the collection of African art of Mme Saint Hilaire in Paris is an impressive Baule executed by the Master of Asher (lot 4) that used to belong to Pierre V?rit?. From the prestigious collection of Dr. Alex Rafaeli - to whom belonged the famous Guro mask that he bought from Paul Guillaume and appeared on the market a few years ago during TEFAF - we have 8 lots of African art, including an outstanding Kota reliquary figure (lot 20). A historical group of Baule sculptures from the Arcade Gallery in London that come with some prestigious provenances, includes a rare and refined Baule Female Figure (lot 42) that was acquired by Peter Wengraf c.1948 from Charles Ratton. Some extraordinary pieces were shown in 2022 at the Quai Branly Museum in the exhibition Power and Prestige. The Art of Clubs in Oceania, and the highlight among them is without doubt a rare Culacula Fiji Club in Maori style (lot 28). From the same collection but from a different continent, we have a fine Fang Figure, lot 81, that used to belong to Philippe Guimiot. Other pieces from collectors who preferred to remain anonymous more than worth mentioning are lot 72, a beautiful "Stargazer" or Kilia Type Figurine from c. 4500 - 3500 B.C., lot 93, an uncommon Bakongo Female figure with a turned head that is impressive in its sobriety, lot 80, a Bangwa sculpture that pairs a rough rendering of shapes with what scholars in Italian art would call an elegant contrapposto attitude, a Tsogho reliquary, lot 84, and so many more. These are but a few of the pieces we wanted to draw your attention to. We are proud to present every lot included in this sale and invite you to discover them with us.
