Headlining the sale are two mesmerizing Alex Katz paintings with his masterful stylized representation fully on display, an ethereal atmospheric Pat Steir waterfall painting, an aggressively gestural Michael Goldberg action painting from the heyday of Abstract Expressionism and a stately large scale Louise Nevelson relief in her signature black providing a portal into refined realms of creativity. Also of note in the auction are exceptional explorations in abstraction from Al Held, Pat Lipsky, Kenneth Noland, Albert Oehlen, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons and Peter Schuyff. For fans of home cooking the sale also excitingly includes compelling examples by Chicago makers Gertrude Abercrombie, William Conger, Richard Hunt, Jim Lutes, Ed Paschke, Barbara Rossi and Julia Thecla. Occupying the third dimension with significance are stunning sculptures by Harry Bertoia, Ilya Bolotowsky, Sorel Etrog and George Rickey, as well as sublime genre defying fiber constructions by Olga de Amaral and Shelia Hicks. We invite your eyes to examine all the rare and extraordinary works on offer to find the lots that hold your gaze and resonate most deeply.
