On June 4, Freeman’s | Hindman presents Collect: American Art Featuring 'Touching the Sun' - The Collection of Dr. Julian Katz and Dr. Sheila Moriber Katz, bringing over 150 examples of American art to market. Of note is an important section of oils, works on paper, sculptures and prints deaccessioned from the Brandwyine Museum, to benefit their future acquisitions. Other highlights include a collection of works by prominent Rockport Massachusetts painters including Richard Hayler Lever and William Lester Stevens. The sale also showcases a wide selection of work by women artists, from Theresa Bernstein and Emma Fordyce MacRae to Mary Fairchild Low, and Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington. Several works by Pennsylvania Impressionists such as Walter Baum, John Folinsbee, Henry B. Snell, and George Sotter also complete the event.
Freeman’s | Hindman is particularly pleased to feature a selection of works from the Collection of Dr. Julian Katz and Dr. Sheila Moriber Katz. Julian was a leading academic gastroenterologist, author, and editor who was instrumental in defining the condition known today as lactose intolerance. Sheila was a celebrated pathologist, business owner, poet, educator, lecturer, and mentor, and the first to identify the lethal bacteria known to cause Legionnaires’ Disease, an experience she described as like "touching the sun?? – a poetic expression Freeman’s | Hindman has decided to honor by including it in the June 4 sale title.
