Exhibition | 12 August - 9 September, London
Monday - Friday, 09:30 - 16:30 BST
Please note the only weekend viewing day will be Sunday 8 September, 11:00 - 15:00 BST.
Roll up, roll up and enter the Fairground World of Ross Hutchinson this summer at 101 New Bond Street. Amassed by Hutchinson over a period of forty years, Bonhams is delighted to offer for sale one of the most important assemblages of fairground art still in existence today. Featuring an eclectic menagerie of carved carousel animals (including dragons, zebras and centaurs) as well as coin operated 'working model' machines, posters, and sculptural forms, this is a show not to be missed.
The fairground as we know it today was 'both a product of industrialisation and a means of escape from it' (James Ayres) as steam power revolutionised the way people worked and played from the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century. Touring shows utilised state of the art engineering to create faster, louder and brighter rides and brought technicolour to the populations of towns and cities across the country.
Lose yourself in the carnival word of the showman and experience firsthand the amazing craftsmanship that went into making the rides during the extended exhibition from 12th August until the sale in September, and bid on lots that are guaranteed to make you smile!
