Mossgreen Spring Auction Series Part I: The Estate of the late Leslie Walford AM For five decades Leslie Walford, who died earlier this year, was one of the principle practitioners of Interior design and decoration in Australia. His career commenced in 1957 on his return from Europe after much travel often accompanied by his mother, Dora Byrne. Educated mainly in England at Winchester College and later reading politics, economics and philosophy at New College Oxford attaining his degree. After further travel he attended the prestigious Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris where he studied design and decoration. It was during this time that Leslie began his collection of beautiful French 18th and 19th century furniture, pictures and objects, most of which he would keep for the rest of his life. Over the years this was complimented by many pieces acquired in Australia and overseas. During these years in Paris he added to his already extensive knowledge of history which he considered so very important. This, which he felt particularly, pertained to the arts, so necessary if you wish to understand design. He became a leader in his field, and during the 1960's and 1970's imported carefully chosen antiques, fabrics and other elements used in decorating projects. Leslie's work became known far and wide not only in Sydney, but as far away as New York and Bermuda, as well as in the country and other capital cities in Australia.
