A Japanese diplomat's collection
Born in the 7th year of the Meiji era to a landowning family in Horinouchi, Suwa Village,
Yoshizawa Kenkichi (1874-1965)? a native of Niigata Prefecture, Japan, went to Tokyo after
attending Takada School in the 5th Middle School District. After studying at Tokyo English
School, he entered Tokyo Imperial University. In 1899 (Meiji 32)? he entered the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and began a long life as a diplomat. 1900? he served as a consular officer
supplement to the Japanese Consulate in Xiamen; in 1923? he assumed the post of Minister
to China and Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in Beiping, China, during which time
he met with the Feng warlord Zhang Zuolin. 1932? he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs
in the Cabinet of Inukai Tsuyoshi. After World War II, Kenkichi Yoshizawa was purged by the
MacArthur headquarters of the Allied occupation forces, but after being released from the
purge, he served as the post-war ambassador to Taipei from 1952 to 1955. He died in 1965
