Fine and Decorative Art

Cowan's Auctions Fine and Decorative Art Auction will take place on March 9, 2013. This sale will feature important works from the Humphreys-Rayburn Collection of Kentucky paintings, the most widely exhibited collection of Kentucky paintings in private hands and includes major works by Kentucky artists, especially Paul Sawyier. Cowan's will also offer works by Carl Christian Brenner and Robert Burns Wilson from the Humphreys-Rayburn collection. In addition the auction will include other fine works by Kentucky and Cincinnati artists such as Frank Duveneck, Henry Farny, Henry Faulkner, E.T. Hurley, Harvey Joiner, and Joseph Henry Sharp.

Another featured work in the sale is a watercolor attributed to the American naturalist William Bartram. This particular watercolor was once owned by Peter Collinson, a wealthy London patron of Bartram who shared Bartram?s work with imminent scholars like Carl Linnaeus and George Edwards. Bartram's sketches rarely come to the public market; almost all are today housed in the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the American Philosophical Society, The British Royal Library, and the London Museum of Natural History. The Fine and Decorative Arts Sale will also include works from Arthur Andersen, of Arthur Andersen LLP. in Chicago.

In addition, the sale will include many fine groupings of furniture, silver, ceramics, folk art and Chinese export ware.
