Asian Arts&Antiques Collction - Anfu Wang
PROVENANCE:A remarkable and deeply personal provenance accompanies its history back to two influential figures in Chinese cultural and political circles: Wang Anfu (1913?2005) and Liu Huanzeng (1908?1989). The couple were the daughter and son-in-law of the distinguished Dr. Chengting T. Wang (Wang Zhengting, 1882?1961), a prominent politician and diplomat of the Republic of China. Dr. Wang's illustrious career spanned pivotal moments in history, from his role as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 to his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to the United States during the 1930s. As an intellectual force, he championed the arts, advocating for the preservation and exhibition of Dunhuang frescoes during his travels between Shanghai, Chengdu, and Chongqing in the early 1940s. Wang Anfu and Liu Huanzeng, both scholars at Yenching University (later Peking University), shared a profound commitment to the preservation of Chinese culture, with Liu?s father, the esteemed scholar Liu Shuping (1857?1917), establishing deep ties with celebrated artists such as Zhang Daqian. The couple not only supported Dr. Wang?s diplomatic endeavors but were also active in safeguarding the cultural legacy that transcended generations. In 1949, as China underwent significant transformation, Dr. Wang relocated to Hong Kong, where he continued his diplomatic and philanthropic work. Wang Anfu and Liu Huanzeng joined him, caring for Dr. Wang until his passing, before ultimately emigrating to the United States.
