Shadow of the Dragon: A Private Collection of Early Chinese Ceramics
Exhibited in 1982 at the Columbus Museum of Art
Caza Sikes is privileged to offer a significant private collection of early Chinese ceramics. This collection was the subject of the landmark 1982 exhibition, "Shadow of the Dragon," at the Columbus Museum of Art, the first comprehensive showing of its kind there. The collection spans Neolithic examples to comprehensive bodies of Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasty ceramics, representing the types of kiln work that interested American collectors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After the exhibition, the pieces returned to the collectors, where they have remained for 43 years.
The ceramics were acquired on trips to Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Singapore. The collectors sought out wares from the celebrated Song, Yuan, and Ming periods, acquiring celadon wares, including the popular Longquan celadon, Qingbai wares, and blanc de chine examples. The bulk of the collection consists of Yuan and Ming dynasty blue-and-white ceramics.
The exhibition's catalog was authored by Kamer Aga-Oglu (1903-1984), a pioneer in 20th-century Chinese ceramics. As the curator of Asian Collections at the University of Michigan Museum, she was the only female curator during her tenure. Her writings on early Chinese trade wares produced groundbreaking scholarship. The private collectors and Aga-Oglu were kindred spirits, both dedicated to the study of ceramics that were widely disseminated beyond China during these golden eras of production.
