Veloy Vigil Trust - Taos' Master Print Maker

Veloy Vigil (1931–1997) was a prominent American contemporary artist and master printmaker best known for his Abstract Expressionist interpretations of Native American and Southwestern themes. He is credited with modernizing the perception of Indigenous art by moving away from "naive" representational styles toward a flowing, vibrant, and emotive aesthetic. Vigil's Taos, New Mexico studio has been bursting these past few years with unreleased lithographs, monoprints, and original works - all waiting for this opportunity to emerge into the world. The baskets are Seri Indian from the Sonoran area of Mexico and the American Southwest. Original framed works and sculptures by Veloy are ready for display. The prints in this auction are from variable editions: slight variations in color or detail may exist in the actual print bid on, but, as in all of his singular work, there is a visceral strength revealed by the artist and reveled in by the viewer on a resonant level of color, shape, form, and abstract figure in many mysterious and mythically stated landscapes. Born in Denver, Colorado, Vigil was raised on farms around Greeley, Colorado. On his mother's side, he was descended from Pueblo Indians and on his father's side from the Spanish. He has created a profound impact on ideas about Native American art because, rather than naive, Vigil's paintings reveal a constant shift between illusive renderings of images from his Native Pueblo heritage and the best in abstract expressionism. A well-respected contemporary artist, Vigil's work is featured internationally and is actively sought for by private and public collections.
