Antiques & Fine Art

Our second Antiques & Fine Art sale of 2013 sees another interesting and varied selection of items on offer. The sale begins strongly with a large privately-consigned collection of modern paperweights to include Caithness, Strathearn, Heron and others. The 20th century is also well represented in the ceramics section, with some familiar names: Moorcroft, in the form of a good large flambé ?Orchid? pattern vase; Wemyss, with one of their typical pigs painted with cabbage roses and thistles; and the desirable Italian firm Lenci, with a large Art Deco figure bought some thirty years ago for by the current owner for her mother. Steeping back in time a little, the sale also features an excellent Doulton Lambeth vase decorated with ponies, by Hannah Barlow. An even larger collection of books, following some real rarities in the last sale ? and this time has raised the stakes with a fantastic group of natural history books from the 17th to 20th centuries, many featuring beautiful hand-coloured plates of rare birds, reptiles and fish. The highlight of these is a two-volume set from 1771, numbered from an original edition of just 75. The picture section includes the studio dispersal of local Sutton Coldfield artist John Ridout (d. 2013), who was an active member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Earlier works include a shipping oil by Alfred W. Williams, a 19th century portrait of mother and daughter by J. P. Davis, and a pair of watercolours by Prof. Giuseppe Ballasio. The clock section features four skeleton clocks all from private estates: from Leicestershire, a Scott Memorial skeleton clock, and from Shropshire three other skeleton clocks plus three good barometers ? a Scottish Georgian stick, a late Georgian wheel with timepiece, and a Victorian 'Admiral Fitzroy. Other notable clocks include an Austrian enamel urn with rotary dial, a rare Jaeger LeCoultre 'Prestige', and a Georgian lacquer longcase with rolling moon.
