Quinn's Auction Galleries annual New Year's Day auction will feature two English artists with great exposure and history. The most prominent is featured in Lot #228 where William Clarke Wontner (1857-1930) painted a classical beauty against a cool marblized backdrop.
Wontner, friend and protege to the more famous John William Godward (1861-1922), taught at the St. John's Wood Art School. Godward and Wontner are well known for their use of a marble backdrop with their classical subjects.
Wontner's had 29 of his classical portraits and other works shown at the Royal Academy during the last two decades of the 19th century. His portrait of Fredrick William Henry Myers (1896) is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London today
The sale also features a beautiful Russian Trompe L'oeil cake/bread basket bearing Moscow city marks and the year 1889, lot #106.
Other items include an array of 18th - early 20th century furniture including an ornate Berkey & Gay china cabinet & server, 50+ pieces of American Art pottery incl. Rookwood, Roseville, Fulper, etc; some very rare pieces of Vaseline glass, amazing Persian & Russian carpets, an awesome bohemian art glass pedestal and lots lots more...
