Sollo: Rago Modern Auction

An extraordinary Modern Auction on April 3-4, 2004 - over 1000 lots of some of the most desirable, eccentric and unusual pieces from the modern era.
- A large Paul Evans wavy front cabinet built around 1966 - only the second known to have come to auction.
- A very fine George Nakashima Conoid bench with back, as well as dining tables, sideboards and grass seat chairs, and two exceptional Buckeye burl tables.
- One of the best collections of Bertoia sculptures to come to the market, including dramatic "sound" sculptures and two very large “Willow” sculptures ranging from five to eight feet in height
- Two pair of unusual wrought iron gates in excellent condition, one by Edgar Brandt c. 1924; the other in the style of Wilhelm Hunt Diederich.
A pair of Tommi Parzinger wrought iron floor lamps, c. 1970, with original shades, a buffet, sofas, case goods and chairs and a rare painting by the designer.
- From the estate of Dr. & Mrs. Sieberth S. Kety of Picayune, Mississippi, a selection of James Mont.
- Several Gilbert Rhode pieces: a desk designed for Herman Miller, a huge stereo cabinet and bookcase, coffee tables, lamp tables and living room pieces.
- Modern artwork: a pencil-signed Joan Miro print, a William Gropper oil on copper, a Phillip Evergood signed drawing, oils on canvas and charcoals by Ludwig Sander, a collection of paintings by Estelle Laverne and a large collection of paintings representing WPA industrial scenes.
- Two walnut and painted plywood units from the "Curvaceous Kitchen" of the Wharton Esherick house.
- Twenty organic turned wood bowls and vases from the 1970's and1980's by artisans Phillip Moultrop, Galen Carpenter, Mel Lindquist and others.
Carl Springer, Vladimir Kagan, Charles Eames, Wendell Castle, Smokey Tunis, and Finn Juhl designs.
- The Saturday evening portion of this sale features important ephemera from the estate of prominent furniture and industrial designer, Edward J. Wormley: Over 100 lots of business and personal documents, catalogs, artwork, original photography (many bearing his signature or company stamp) and a large collection of material relating to the Dunbar Furniture Company. The remainder of the evening features books, periodicals and ephemera relating to modern design. some from the estates of designers Angelo Testa, Lester Beal and Joseph Carr.
