The May 4 auction offers Autographs and Rare Books, as well as Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints. The BOOKS section of the sale features an atlas portfolio of 81 aquatint and facsimile plates after Karl Bodmer chronicling Prince Maximilian's travels in America among the Plains Indians from 1832 to 1834; a selection of sporting books and 19th century horticultural color plate books; and a remarkable manuscript journal and sketchbook by American artist Lewis Miller of his travels in Europe in 1840-41. The AUTOGRAPHS are highlighted by the Book of the Presidents featuring a compilation of 31 letters and documents signed by Presidents of the United States from George Washington to FDR. Other noteworthy autographs include Winston Churchill, Catherine the Great of Russia, Samuel Clemens, Charles Darwin, two examples by Albert Einstein, Mohandas K. Gandhi, Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln, Charles Lindbergh, Richard Wagner and William Butler Yeats, as well as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Margot Fonteyn, Sir John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Rudolph Nureyev, Claudette Colbert and sheet music for Send in the Clowns autographed by composer Stephen Sondhem. The PRINTS section of the sale features MODERN EUROPEAN works by Toulouse-Lautrec, James Ensor, Miró, Ben Nicholson, Paul Gauguin, Braque, Chagall, Picasso and Renoir. AMERICAN prints are highlighted by Whistler, Paul Cadmus, Mabel Dwight, Childe Hassam, Martin Lewis, Jacques Lipchitz, Charles White, Max Weber; Thomas Hart Benton, and John Marin. CONTEMPORARY prints include Motherwell, Larry Rivers, Frank Stella, Lichtenstein, and Willem de Kooning. Also featured are works by Al Hirschfeld, include two depicting the actor Peter Allen acquired from his estate.
