September Fine & Decoratives Arts Auction
The September auction at Nye will include ?Property of Boscobel Restoration, Inc., Garrison, New York, Deaccessioned by Action of the Board of Directors, Proceeds to Benefit Collection Acquisition and Conservation.? Of the nearly 600 lots in the auction, nearly two dozen will come from the historic Hudson River Valley home. Nye and Company provides the community with a free walk-in appraisal service every Monday. It was at one of these events when an unassuming woman came in with her daughter-in-law carrying an incredibly detailed watercolor of a church, which turned out to be an image of a building in lower Manhattan and is signed Maurice Prendergast. Almost a dozen lithographs by Al Hirschfeld come from a gentleman. He?s selling some iconic caricatures like Woody Allen, Madonna, Sammy Davis Junior, The Wizard of Oz and the boxed set of The Comedians.
From an elderly woman moving into smaller quarters, Nye received a lovely groups of paintings. The most notable is an oil on board of ?Norfolk Dunes? by English artist Edward Seago and another Seago titled, ?Suffolk Farm in Summer.? An image of Mother and Child by the Vietnamese artist, Vu Cao Dam is dated 1967. Period furniture from area collectors includes a pair of Federal games tables, two Queen Anne highboys, some lolling chairs, a Victorian standing shaving mirror, a Boston Queen Anne slant front desk, a near pair of Pembroke tables and much more. The sterling silver offering is very strong. For example, a monumental punch bowl, cups, underplate made by Hennegan Bates Co., with an associated ladle. There are demi-tasse cups and saucers from Jenkins and Jenkins. Works by such other firms as Gorham, Bailey, Reed & Barton, Cartier, Coburn, Spratling and Tiffany, including a flatware service for twelve in the Olympia pattern. The auction contains a large amount of sterling silver.
