Fine Ethnographic Art

Highlights of this sale include a a number of important Northwest Coast items including a 19th Century Raven mask and an Eagleface Shaman's rattle collected in 1903 by Ralph Stockman Tarr. Additionally there is a fine and important collection of Inuit material, most of it fresh to market from a private New England collection amassed over decades from whaling and nautical families in the Northern New England area. This collection includes superbly carved implements and pipes as well as figural shamanic objects. Outstanding Polynesian art is also featured with clubs and staves from Fiji, Neckrests and paddles; lithic material from Hawaii including a Very rare Hawaiian stone mirror; nephrite Tiki as well as a rare human bone Tiki with important provenance and a rare Hawaiian human bone fishhook are also included. The Tribal Art world lost a luminary in September with the passing of John C. Edler; former curator of the Hemmeter collection and expert and field collector of art of New Guinea. A large number of Edler collected objects will be included from all parts of Papua New Guinea throughout his long career. The African section includes the Rudolph de Harak collection; a small but highly important group of objects obtained prior to 1968 by the master designer and artist from Kamer, Segy and others with original receipts. This collection includes a stunning Dogon Satimbe mask, and superb Mossi or Kurumba/Nyonose mask. Other African offerings are from a private New York collection purchased prior to 1967 from 'The Gallery of African Art' then in the lobby of New York's Hotel Ansonia, from a young aspiring Alfred Sheinberg. There are numerous other lots of various offerings from all over Sub-Saharan Africa, with a small collection of fine Yoruba beadwork. A small but important group of Precolumbian includes a number of stone maskettes, some with important provenance from the Teotihuacan and Mayan cultural horizons.
