Couture, Textiles and Accessories
The November 17 auction of Couture, Textiles and Accessories will showcase two centuries of fashion history. Offering an extensive selection of dresses, suits and ensembles, the sale will also include important costume jewelry, handbags and accessories, as well as American, European and Asian textiles. Featured is the Mosaic Foundation’s West Looks East Collection, comprising 29 lots of contemporary couture donated by Chanel/Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Dior/John Galliano, Christian Lacroix, Dominique Sirop, Donna Karan, Elie Saab, Emanuel Ungaro, Gianfranco Ferre, Giorgio Armani, Jean-Louis Scherrer/Stephane Rolland, Jean Paul Gaultier, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Rucci, Reem Acra and Valentino, together with the designers' sketches. West Looks East collection is being sold to benefit a tele-medicine project between Children’s National Medical Center and North Africa. Other auction highlights include designs from the estate of Suzanne Godart Cella, as well as pieces by Worth, Poiret, Fortuny, Chanel, and Balenciaga, while American design is represented by Galanos, Norell, Trigere, and Stephen Sprouse, in addition to early 1970s Rive Gauche menswear. Textiles comprise laces gathered by Margaret Taylor Johnston; a rare and fine example of an Appenzel lace commemorative handkerchief; and Emilio Pucci “couture for the home.” Cecil Beaton photographs and Nina Ricci costume designs depict Alexis, Baron de Rede, at the 1951 Bestegui Ball. Accessories include a range of Hermes bags, including an Hermes Rouge H matte crocodile birkin with pave diamonds. Other offerings include hats, shoes and boots, in addition to costume jewelry by Chanel, Coppola e Toppo, Moini, and Kenneth Lane.
