The Wolverton Collection of Black Americana

The Howard Wolverton Collection of Black American History is a 2000+ piece collection that represents the changing roles and images of Black Americans in the United States, from the late 1700s to the 1960s. A New Jersey high school history teacher, Mr. Wolverton (1910-2005) collected across the spectrum of Black Memorabilia, from sheet music to toys and games, books, textiles, artwork, photographs, newspapers and furniture and used it all when instructing his students. His first purchase of Black Americana in 1963 was a piece of sheet music and highlights of the auction include the sheet music of "The Bereaved Slave Mother," and "When a Coon Sits in the Presidential Chair," and many pieces by the piano prodigy, Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins. Other rare items include a series of scrapbooks by the Civil War era ex-slave David F. Nelson, a tintype of the Civil War mariner hero, William Tillman, a poster for a lecture by a young Booker T. Washington, Ives windup toys, a meersham pipe of "Fugitive Slaves," a painted Folk Art tray top lap desk, trade cards, post cards, advertising and much more.
