Silver, Coins & Medals

Welcome to our first specialist auction of Silver & Plated Ware and Coins & Medals of 2016. This auction features over 600 lots of silver holloware, flatware and novelties, followed by a varied selection of coins and military and civilian medals. Our highlights for the silver section begin with a wonderful collection of novelty items typical of the unusual and novel nature found amongst small collectables, including some beautiful examples by the acclaimed silversmith and goldsmith Sampson Mordan & Co. Lot 447 is a Victorian scent bottle, with tapered cranberry glass body and cover modelled as an owl, hallmarked Sampson Mordan & Co, London 1894. Other alluring pieces include Lot 448- a nineteenth century French hinged walnut case opening to a metal compartment which houses three miniature cranberry scent bottles. For those with an interest in hunting, may we draw your attention to Lot 293 & 294 - these early twentieth century German stirrups cups; the name derived from having a cup whilst one?s feet were in the stirrups; would have been filled with a drink such as port or sherry, and served to the huntsman when already mounted as a toast. By the nature of their shape they would not be put down until the vessel was empty. Other highlights include Lot 37 - An Edwardian silver Warwick vase by Edward Barnard & Sons, London 1907. The Warwick Vase originates from fragments discovered by Gavin Hamilton (1723?1798) in 1769-70, which he found whilst excavating in the silts of Lake Pantanello in the grounds of the Villa Tiburtina outside of Rome. The villa was owned by the renowed Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-38). This example is beautifully applied with Bacchanalian heads and flambé torches within trailing vine, grape and acanthus leaf borders. The second part of our auction is dedicated to Coins & Medals. Included in our military section is (Lot 633) ? Victoria, Indian General Service Medal, Indian Mutiny and Afghanistan medal Trio to General George Scougall Macbean.
