Silver, Coins & Medals

Welcome to our summer auction of Silver & Plated Ware and Coins & Medals. This auction features over 800 lots of silver holloware, flatware and novelties, followed by a varied selection of coins and military and medals. Our highlights for the silver section begin with some wonderful pieces by Albert Edwards Jones including Lot 102, A mid-twentieth century child's pedestal and shallow dish, each with applied continuous rim of a fox in pursuit of geese, alongside Lot 127 - A modern silver chalice and paten, the flared foot with applied asymmetrical enamelled cross. Other well-known makers in the sale include a turn of the century Russian silver paper knife by Faberge (Lot 263). Often the inscriptions on silver can reveal interesting snippets of history and Lot 519 is a perfect example; this George IV silver dual-hinged table snuff box is engraved for 'His Royal Highness Albert Edward Prince of Wales Born 9 Nov'r 1841' below the Prince of Wales's feathers heraldic badge, 'The Reverend William Webb Ellis M.A. Rector of this Parish Inducted February 13 1843', and further engraved with the names of the churchwardens of St Clement Danes, Westminster, London until 1953. As the traditional nursery rhymes goes 'Oranges and lemons" say the bells of St. Clement's?. The second part of our auction is dedicated to Coins & Medals. Included in our military section is Lot 741 - a George Medal, WWII and General Service medal group awarded to Major Ronald Victor Harley, 243086. Formerly 'Cheese' having changed his surname by deed poll in 1946, Harley was awarded the George Medal, in recognition of his gallant and distinguished services, following an explosion at the No. 3 Central Ammunition Sub-Depot in Hampstead Norris, Bramley; of which he was supervising receipt of ammunition at the time. The conferment of the George Medal listed in the supplement to the London Gazette, 31st July 1951 details the incident.
