About Delta Axis Delta Axis, a non-profit visual arts organization, celebrates over fourteen years of bringing contemporary art to Memphis audiences. Since its inception, Delta Axis has been the only organization in Memphis dedicated exclusively to contemporary art, fulfilling a crucial role in one of the most creative and exciting arts communities in the South. The dialogue between local and national artists created by Delta Axis is critical to the success of our local arts community, which in turn is playing a key role in positioning Memphis as a world-class city. The mission of Delta Axis is to present contemporary art and film and link Memphis with global artistic communities. Delta Axis manages four outlets for visual arts in Memphis: Power House, Indie Memphis Film Festival, Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts, and MAX biennial. Venues Power House Memphis, 45 E. G.E. Patterson, Memphis, TN 38103 Power House Memphis, a contemporary art space housed within a 4,000-square-foot brick and glass building, is the latest addition to Delta Axis’s programming. In 2003 Power House Memphis, modified by architect Coleman Coker, won an award for “Best Historical Building Conversion” in Memphis. Since opening in 2003, this venue has brought to Memphis audiences exhibitions, installations and performances by such notable artists as William Eggleston, Marc Quinn, Paul Graham, Mitch Epstein, Janet Cardiff, George Bures Miller, and George Condo, among others. Indie Memphis Film Festival Malco's Studio on the Square in midtown Memphis The Indie Memphis Film Festival showcases independent films that focus on the South and supports the local filmmaking community. The “Soul of Southern Film” is the only festival that celebrates and explores the image of the American South. Indie Memphis expanded its programming in 2004-5 to include monthly events held at Power House. The monthly Micro Cinema program, featuring short films from around the world has been a tremendous success, with audiences of 40-100+ attending. This program has also served to introduce a new audience to artists featured in Power House exhibition Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts, 639 Marshall, Memphis, TN 38103 Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts features diverse works by local, national and international artists who push beyond traditional artistic boundaries. Since 1999, Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts has presented exhibitions curated by local and regional artists, bringing works by artists from across the country to the Memphis community. Located in the artist studio building, Marshall Arts, in a light industrial neighborhood near downtown Memphis and the tourist attraction, Sun Studio, Delta Axis @ Marshall Arts provides an alternative venue for artists to exhibit their work and that of their colleagues. MAX MAX is a collaboration with the Art Museum of the University of Memphis to bring internationally recognized curators to Memphis to create exhibitions featuring local artists within a larger national and international context. MAX was established in 1997, and has developed into Memphis’ only biennial exhibition. MAX:05, “The Inner Voice of Art” was curated by David Moos, Curator of Contemporary Art at Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto.
