Fine Books & WWI Art, the Culpin Collection

Cowan?s December 18 Fine Books & World War I Art Auction, including the Alan Culpin Collection of World War I Art, is comprised of a wide range of books dating from the 16th to the 20th century, and dozens of paintings documenting The Great War, as well as war-related photographs, albums, and more.

Highlights of the Fine Books section of the sale include such varied offerings as African Game Trails, by Theodore Roosevelt, a unique association copy twice-signed by Roosevelt, extra-illustrated with photographs by John Andrew Loring, and with tipped-in ephemera (Lot 281); Aveux Non Avenus, a rare volume of photomontages by the French surrealists Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore (Lot 133); The Novels and Tales of Henry James, a 24-volume set in fine bindings, with frontis illustrations by Alvin Langdon Coburn (Lot 115); William Beebe's classic four-volume work The Pheasants, limited to 600 sets, signed and inscribed in 1919 (Lot 181); and Histoire de Belle-Isle-En-Mer, a unique and beautifully-written unpublished 1754 manuscript of 650 quarto pages with watercolor illustrations, bound by Bauzonnet-Trautz (Lot 194). A portion of the sale comes from the collection of the late Ivan Gilbert of Columbus, Ohio, and another section is from the library of a noted collector of Western Americana.

The World War I Art offerings com exclusively from the collection of Alan Culpin, a longtime dealer and collector from Denver, Colorado. The majority of the collection is comprised of watercolors, oil paintings, sketches, and prints made during the Great War, supplemented by several lots of photographs, including photograph albums made for official use and kept by officers on both sides of the conflict.
