19th/ 20th Century American and European Art

An important auction for serious collectors of the works of artists from the Delaware River Valley in a larger sale featuring 19th and 20th Century artists, among them Orrin White, Hermann Herzog, William Lee Hankey and Granville Redmond. The cover lot “Side Wheel in the Rondout” by Charles Rosen is a large landscape that carries a superb provenance and exhibition history. A fresh-to-market work by Fern Coppedge is also a high point. “Summer on the Delaware” came to Rago’s through descent in a local family from the artist herself. This view is from New Hope to Lambertville across the Delaware. Pennsylvania Impressionist works include (among others by the artist) an untitled Harry Leith-Ross landscape descended in the Leith-Ross family ($9,000 - $12,000); six works by Walter Baum, the work of Alfred Nunamaker and Russell W. Recchion. The Pennsylvania Modernists and Contemporaries are well-represented. There are works from Lloyd Ney, among them a fine abstract painting ($3,000 and $5,000). Other Modernists represented: a large (20” x 26” sight) Nordfeldt landscape entitled An Island ($4,000 - $6,000); two Meierhans watercolors in artist-made frames; and works by Rosen, Greene, Bye, Ponstingl, Christ, Keene, Etting and Barrett. Also in the first session are fine works by artists of the Pennsylvania Academy featuring James Brade Sword’s The Narrows at Lake George ($10,000 - $15,000); two seascapes by William Trost Richards, and Martha Walter’s Untitled (Gloucester Scene) estimated between $5,000 and $7,000. The second session of the auction features works by American and European artists including Antoine Bouvard, Austin Wooster, Edward Hopper, Max Kuehne and Abraham Walkowitz. Notable among these is the Herzog, Moonrise in Florida, estimated at $25,000 and $35,000; Orrin White’s oil on board Untitled ($8,500 - $12,500); and William Lee Hankey’s The Riviera near St. Raphael ($6,000 - $8,000).
