Fine Art & Antiques Session II

Simpson Galleries is proud to offer this extensive collection of art and antiques. Highlights include a painting by Soren Emil Carlsen, an epergne by English silversmith William Pitts, important and rare vases by Emilé Gallé and Otto Eckman, a French Napoleon III inlaid boulle cabinet, a sonambient sculpture by Harry Bertoia, and a selection of fine wines from a private cellar. Exclusively offered by Simpson Galleries in this auction is the lifetime collection of Dr. and Mrs. Jack McNeill, Houston and Beaumont, Texas. Also included, items from the personal collection of Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby, born in Bedford, England in 1842. A member of the Royal Horse Guards in 1859, Captain Burnaby was a skilled swordsman and linguist which facilitated his travels throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa during the middle of the 19th century. Burnaby subsequently served in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 and was soon after promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He returned to England and married Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed in 1879. Colonel Burnaby met his end in hand to hand combat during the Battle of Abu Klea, Egypt, in 1885. It is said that when informed of the Colonel's demise, Queen Victoria was so overcome that she fainted.
